MGMT – Kids (Soulwax Remix)

Posted on 12. Sep, 2008 by Damian.

MGMT has been weirdly riding the pop culture popularity wave since the very beginning despite reports of lackluster shows and the fact the album only had one good song. Well here that one great song is remixed by Soulwax. There are a lot of people eagerly awaiting Soulwax’s official remix of MGMT ’s ‘Kids’ track. Only a chosen few have received promos thus far. From what I read the release date of this is October 13th. This is going to be huge!

Matt Myer vs Southside Rockers – Rock On 2008

Posted on 12. Sep, 2008 by Damian.

The new hit single ‘Rock On 2008‘ from Matt Myer and the Southside Rockers. ROCK ON! This is the best description for this high-energetic, bangin’ tune. All over Europe successful in the early 2000s the original ‘Southside Rockers – Rock on’ already was on everyone’s lips and in every dj’s case, but now in 2008, Matt Myer is lifting the theme onto a higher, more clubby level. After his hits like ‘Sex Girl‘ and ‘Dance for you‘ – in his usual manner – Chris Montana adds a little more minimal, very groovy and less commercial remix. On the other hand are the two big room versions from DJ Sign and Doc Phatt. They’ll blow everybody away on the more commercial floors.

Dirty South talks about upcoming album ‘Toolroom Knights’

Posted on 11. Sep, 2008 by Damian.

Grammy nominated producer and DJ Dirty South is about to release a new album called ‘Toolroom Knights’ on Toolroom Records September 15th.

EDIT: The album is already available here.

What was your overall approach to constructing a Toolroom mix?

The tracks for this compilation were selected on the basis of tracks I was into and what I was playing at the time of selection. It also features some Toolroom releases and of course some of my productions. I keyed all the tracks and mixed both discs with Ableton Live.

Do you feel that you’ve achieved what you set out to with the mix?

I am really happy with this mix.I would say it is my favourite compilation to date. I think I achieved exactly what I intended with it.

How would you describe the sound of mix?

The sound of the mix varies throughout both discs. Disc 1 is little deeper, weirder and sexier, where the second disc is more big room sounding.

How did you go about selecting tracks for the mix? [...]

The release date for Ferry Corsten’s new single ‘Radio Crash’ is not yet known, but it’s already being supported by Above & Beyond, Tiesto and Armin van Buuren, where it was voted ‘Future Favourite’ on his ‘A State of Trance’ radio show. Energetic and catchy ‘Radio Crash’ has that signature Ferry sound and will be released on Ferry’s own Flashover label. The track is a taster of what to expect from Ferry’s new artist album, which he is currently still working on. We’ll keep you posted with news of album details and release dates as soon as we hear it, but for now you can listen to ‘Radio Crash’ below.

Dance music fans are “outgoing” and “creative”, but “not gentle”, says new study

Posted on 05. Sep, 2008 by Damian.

A new study of over 36,000 people undertaken by the UK’s Herriot-Watt University has found that fans of certain types of music often exhibit similar characteristics. Since the mods & rockers clashed on the beaches of Brighton in the 1960s, music fans have been fast to align themselves with their own tribe, notably in the myriad world of dance music sub-genres. The study, led by Professor Adrian North, is said to be the largest of its kind. According to the research, dance fans – like the famous ‘Techno Viking’, pictured above – tend to be outgoing, creative, & “not gentle”. “We have always suspected a link between music taste & personality,” said Professor North on the BBC News web site. Participants from countries across the globe were asked to rate 104 different style of music and were also asked questions about their personality. “This is the first time that we’ve been able to look at it in real detail. No-one has ever done this on this scale before.” A number of the results differ from conventional stereotypes – who would have thought, for instance, that fans of both classical & heavy metal music would share characteristics such as being “creative, at ease, but not outgoing”? Meanwhile, certain results verge on the comedic, like the assertion that reggae fans are “not hardworking”, or that blues listeners,  ironically, tend to have “high self-esteem”. And as for dance music fans being “not gentle” – it seems like all that shoving at the bar over the years may have rubbed off on us, after all.
You can read more about the study at the BBC News web site.
